Central Georgia Technical College (CGTC), the 638th Supply Chain Management Group (638th SCMG) and the 431st Supply Chain Management Squadron (431st SCMS) recently met to formally establish an internship program for the purpose of enhancing the group with a skilled workforce.

Representatives from all three organizations signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to build upon an already established relationship, hoping to further connect CGTC students seeking career opportunities. The agreement offers a new internship avenue of part-time, work-based study for the Associate of Science degree in Business and Logistics Management students pursuing a four-year degree.

CGTC President Dr. Ivan H. Allen spoke highly of this internship calling any position at Robins AFB, “one of the finest jobs in the country.” Allen and Kimberly Herren, director of the 638th SCMG, agreed that this signing is about keeping young people around who want to stay local and work at Robins.

“My big banner since I have been in this position has been that we are missing out on a key group of young people who start at a technical college and end up going on to a four-year degree,” Herren said. “I knew they were coming out of CGTC with an associates and that is right where we want to catch them, and allow them to work with us part-time as they complete their last two years of school.”

Students who complete the requirements of the degree at CGTC and enroll in a bachelor’s of science program at an institution of high learning are eligible to participate in the internship with the 638th SCMG. CGTC will begin to track and monitor students who qualify and recommend them to take advantage of this unique career opportunity.

As students progress through the degree program with CGTC, they will have numerous opportunities to discover more about the work of the 638th SCMG. The agreement sets in place a series of tours and presentations offered by the 638th SCMG for Business and Logistics Management students.

Following graduation from the College, CGTC will refer qualified students to the 431st SCMS who will facilitate and manage the internship program through their offices and workspaces. Key components of the internship will be the integration into collaboration with faculty and base personnel for research, fostering work experience and training as an extension of their learning, and providing opportunity to continue their growth and study as employees upon graduation.

Leadership from both organizations remarked on the persistence of everyone involved to see this agreement come to pass.
