WARNER ROBINS, Ga. — Robins Air Force Base now has a new title to add. It was released Tuesday during the State of the Base.
Middle Georgia is one of five places to now be awarded the title Great American Defense Community.
And after hearing all the achievements the base has accomplished in just a year, Chrissy Minor, President and CEO of the Museum of Aviation Foundation, says she isn’t surprised.
“It’s amazing,” she said. “We know we are a Great American Defense Community, but now the Association of Defense says we are too.”
Numbers for how the base is doing financially were also announced at the State of the Base. Just this year, over 800 new people have been hired.
Officials say a lot of this is simply due to demand.
“The Air Force is asking us to do more and more each and every day,” Brigadier General John Kubinec said, “to sustain the weapon systems that we put men and women into combat in.”
An initiative was put in place to hire a certain number of people in 12 months.
“Going on our goal to bring 1,200 people in,” Kubinec said. “So far we’ve on-boarded 886 new employees since we’ve kicked off this campaign.”
Colonel Ed Goebel said the need for good service members is high.
“We have been and continue to be in high demand across all of our combat commands,” he said. “The most discussed and demanded asset among all the geographic combatton on the highest levels.”
But Colonel Lyle Drew says all of this is leading to huge economic growth.
“In the past year, the economy has grown $273 million to take us to $3.15 million of an economic impact in MG,” he said.
